Phonics

All children from Reception to Year 2 have a daily phonics lesson in school. As a school, we follow Letters and Sounds, and letter sounds and names are taught in the specific order suggested in the letter and sounds document.

Children entering the nursery are exposed to the skills of blending and segmenting as well as having sounds of the week.  These are taught to parents during the weekly sharing session on a Friday.  this is one of the ways that we help parents to be able to help their children.

Daily phonics lessons can be taught either as a whole class or in small ability groups, however, for those children taught in ability groups there will also be opportunities for children to learn together as a class over the course of a week.  Children at the end of Year 1 are assessed using the Phonics Screening Check in order to see the progress they are making with their phonic skills.
